about the Fellowship

WHAT: A FREE two-week leadership fellowship abroad. This international experience includes masterclasses, community impact days, cultural immersion and training labs.

WHO: You are a high school student residing in Broward or Miami-Dade County, Florida, and are currently between the ages of 15-18. Preference is for high school sophomores and juniors during the time of application. A limited number of current high school seniors will be selected.

WHERE: Location TBD. Partner countries include Rwanda, South Africa, Namibia, Indonesia and Ghana.

BONUS: Every applicant receives FREE access to online college strategy coaching and every finalist receives a leadership impact training certificate.

Eligible candidates

  • You have a positive attitude and are excited about new experiences, new cultures, new people, and of course, travel.

  • You are a high school student residing in Broward or Miami-Dade County, Florida, and are currently between the ages of 15-18.

    • Preference is for students who are high school sophomores or juniors during the time of application. A limited number of current high school seniors will be selected.

  • You have demonstrated a record of leadership in your community through extracurricular activities and non-school affiliated services projects.

  • You have a financial need or economic disadvantage and/or your total annual family income is below $85,000.

  • You are currently enrolled in high school and have a minimum GPA of 3.0.

  • You currently have or will secure a valid passport in time to complete the international travel component of the fellowship (scheduled July 2022). Passports must be valid for at least 12 months from June 1st of the year you will be traveling for the fellowship.   • You can meet all Fellowship Deadlines (see below).

  • Your parents/guardians complete all applicable written consent and release forms as well as eSign your online application.

  • You are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 prior to traveling for the fellowship (either 2 doses of Pfizer or Moderna, or 1 dose of Johnson & Johnson, completed before June 30th, 2022). You will also be required to obtain any additional vaccinations needed for the country selected for the fellowship.

CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) CONSIDERATIONS

Due to the global pandemic and resulting economic impact of COVID-19, all 2022 Fellows will be required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by July 2022 when they will travel for their fellowship. The location of the fellowship is subject to international clearance and authorization from relevant national and international authorities, including but not limited to the U.S. Department of State, the Center for Disease Control, and the World Health Organization.

Application Instructions & Deadlines

  • NOVEMBER 15, 2021: Applications Open online at www.nyahproject.org/apply

  • FEBRUARY 17, 2022 @ 11:59 PM ET: Application Deadline!
    Program applications must be submitted online and received by the Nyah Project no later than 11:59 PM EST (NO exceptions)

  • FEBRUARY 25, 2022: Semi-Finalists Notified
    Applicants who are accepted as semi-finalists will be notified via the Submittable platform.

  • MARCH 4, 2022 (evening): LEAD Workshop Kickoff (virtual)
    All semi-finalists must participate in the VIRTUAL LEAD Workshop to be considered for the summer Global Leadership Fellowship in Africa or Southeast Asia.

  • MARCH 5, 2022 (all day): LEAD Workshop (virtual)
    All finalists must participate in the VIRTUAL LEAD Workshop to be considered for the summer Global Leadership Fellowship in Africa or Southeast Asia.

  • MARCH 19, 2022: Impact Video Recording (in person)
    All semi-finalists will record a video pitch of their group impact projects.

  • (Final Date TBA but either APRIL 3 or 9), 2022 (all day): LEAD Youth Impact Summit (virtual)
    All finalists must participate in the VIRTUAL LEAD Youth Impact Summit to be considered for the summer Global Leadership Fellowship in Africa or Southeast Asia.

  • LATE APRIL 2022: Finalists notified
    All semi-finalists who are selected as Finalists to move to the next round of the selection process will be notified via the Submittable platform.

  • APRIL 25 to 27, 2022: Finalist Interviews (virtual)
    All finalists must participate in a series of individual interviews.

  • MAY 14, 2022: Selection Announcement
    2022 Nyah Project Fellows notified

  • MID/LATE JULY 2022: Fellowship Travel
    2022 Fellows will complete the travel component of their Global Experiential Leadership Fellowship to Africa or Southeast Asia.

    Selected Fellows MUST have secured a passport no later than May 1st, 2022 and that is valid through February 2023 (6 months post-fellowship travel). Certain countries require that we apply for a visa that can take up to a month to receive.
